On our Own...

The fog lifted early today and after we enjoyed a great breakfast with the O'Briens, we were treated to clear blue skies.  Mike & Grace soon arrived at the Aspen and we bid our friends farewell and we headed off for our journey to Marquette, MI.    Our route saw us head west out of Arlington on RT 313.  The road was very Model A friendly.  We crossed into NY and eventually found our way to RT 29.  The rolling farm land, with the mountains in the distant, was very picturesque.  Mike was quick to add this wasn't what he was expecting NY to look like.  We were just cruising along when all of a sudden a large deer darted in front of me.  I hit the brakes and fortunately the deer was very quick and made it safely across the street.  I guess we will have to be on the alert as we continue.

At our lunch stop we discussed where we should stop for the day.  The consensus was we would stop in Syracuse.  We called ahead and made hotel reservations and then continued on our way.  Since this was Sunday we saw a few other classic (mostly muscle) cars on the road.  The other interesting note was the hi fives we always got from the folks on motorcycles.  They always gave us a wave, and we returned the gesture.

The route we traveled followed along the Mohawk River and the Erie Canal.  We saw lots of signs for old canal locks as we traveled.  One had to marvel at the effort that went into constructing the canal by manual labor.  Another thing we noticed was the heat, and soon a bank sign told us why; it read 87 degrees.  Fortunately we arrived at the hotel and checked in for the night after 183 miles.

Oh, Harold, Mike says the engine is running great, but the hose is leaking.
